## What CannabisTrade is

CannabisTrade is a verified business-to-business (B2B) marketplace for the
global legal cannabis industry. It connects three sides:

1. **Producers / cultivators** — companies licensed to grow, process, or
   manufacture cannabis products who want to sell wholesale internationally.
2. **Buyers / distributors** — companies licensed to import, distribute, or
   resell cannabis products who want to source from verified supply.
3. **Labs / testing facilities** — accredited laboratories that issue
   Certificates of Analysis (COAs) and other compliance certificates that
   gate listings on the marketplace.

The platform itself is **neutral infrastructure**. CannabisTrade does not
buy or sell cannabis, does not take a percentage of trades, and does not sell
user data. It earns revenue through a flat per-company subscription on the
public Operator tier.

## Why it exists

The legal cannabis industry crossed approximately $50 billion in global trade
volume in 2025, but most cross-border wholesale deals still happen via
WhatsApp, email, and shared spreadsheets. There is no Bloomberg-Terminal /
ICIS-style infrastructure layer for compliant cannabis wholesale.

CannabisTrade is building that layer:

- **Verified network** — every company onboarded under tenant-admin review.
- **Compliance-first** — listings require approved lab certificates that match
  the regulatory regime of the jurisdiction they ship to.
- **Truly global** — 17 languages, RTL support for Arabic and Hebrew, world-map
  view of activity per category.

## How it works (in detail)

### 1. Request access

A prospective company submits a request at
https://www.cannabis-trade.com/request-access including their email, company
name, role (producer / buyer / lab / logistics), and a free-text note about
their operation, jurisdictions, and volumes.

The form is processed by a hosted form-handler (Formspree) that delivers the
submission to the CannabisTrade team. CannabisTrade does not store the lead
data on its own infrastructure.

### 2. Verification + onboarding

A CannabisTrade tenant admin reviews the requester's licensing documents and
KYB (Know-Your-Business) information. If approved (typically within 48 hours),
the company is added to its workspace tenant with capabilities scoped to what
it does:

- `BUY_PRODUCTS`, `SELL_PRODUCTS` — the two trading capabilities.
- `CREATE_SAMPLES` — for sample-program participation.
- `REQUEST_CERTIFICATES`, `ISSUE_CERTIFICATES` — the two cert-flow roles.
- `PROVIDE_DELIVERY`, `PROVIDE_WAREHOUSING`, `MANAGE_STOCK`, `INSPECT_GOODS`
  — for logistics-side companies.
- `BROKER_DEALS` — for licensed broker companies.
- `RUN_ADS` — for paid promotion (post-beta).
- `ACCEPT_PAYMENTS`, `HOLD_FUNDS_ESCROW`, `PAYOUT_FUNDS` — for the
  payment-handling tier (post-beta).
- `MODERATE_CHAT_CHANNELS`, `MODERATE_WALL` — community moderation roles.

### 3. Listing or browsing

Verified producers post **sell offers** (price, quantity, category,
location). Verified buyers post **buy interests** (max price, quantity,
target category). The marketplace surfaces matches with:

- Geo-aware search (filter by country, region, city)
- Category-based browsing with a tree-structured taxonomy
- Real-time dock-style chat (public channels per category + private DMs +
  per-negotiation channels)
- World-map view of activity per category

### 4. Certificate workflow

For categories that require lab certification (THC potency, pesticide residue,
microbial counts, heavy metals, mycotoxins, residual solvents), the workflow is:

1. Producer creates a sell offer in a regulated category.
2. The offer goes into `DRAFT` status — cannot be published.
3. Producer requests a certificate from a registered lab in the marketplace.
4. The certificate moves through states: `DRAFT` → `SUBMITTED` →
   `PAYMENT_REQUIRED` (if applicable) → `PAID` → `PARCEL_REQUIRED` (if applicable)
   → `PARCEL_SENT` → `IN_REVIEW` → `APPROVED` / `REJECTED` /
   `CHANGES_REQUESTED`.
5. Once `APPROVED`, the linked sell offer can be published.

### 5. Negotiation + close

Buyers and producers negotiate terms in real-time chat with a structured
counter-offer thread (price, quantity, terms). When both sides agree, the deal
is signed with an audit trail. During beta, fulfilment is bilateral — payment
moves directly between parties; logistics is arranged independently. Optional
escrow with regulated partners and integrated logistics ship in 2026.

## Architecture

- **Marketing site**: static Next.js export served by nginx (this domain).
- **Marketplace app**: Next.js 16 + Postgres + Prisma 7 + custom socket.io
  server, deployed on k3s (HostHatch VPS), served at app.cannabis-trade.com.
- **Database**: Postgres with Row-Level Security per tenant. Each tenant's
  data is fully isolated at the DB level.
- **Authentication**: email/password (bcrypt-hashed) via Auth.js.
- **i18n**: 17 languages, machine-translated with native-speaker review
  ongoing. RTL handling for Arabic and Hebrew.

**No transaction fees, ever.** CannabisTrade does not take a percentage of
deals struck on the marketplace. All trade revenue stays with the trading
parties.

## Compliance posture

- **Audit trail**: every status change, transaction, and certificate event is
  preserved indefinitely for regulator requests.
- **Data residency**: EU primary (Germany), with optional US/APAC residency
  for enterprise.
- **Privacy**: GDPR (EU), KVKK (Turkey), CCPA (California) compliant; data
  subject access, deletion, and portability honoured within statutory windows.
- **Tenant isolation**: Postgres RLS at the database level — no
  cross-tenant data access possible.

## Public commitments

- Free during private beta. No payment information requested.
- 0% take-rate on trades. Forever.
- No data monetisation. We earn revenue from subscriptions only.
- Open APIs: every flow exposed in the UI is also a REST endpoint.
- Cancel anytime; full data export included.
